Which Braces Are The Most Effective?

If you are considering getting braces, you might be driving yourself crazy researching what’s available on the market. Or by trying to decide which treatment is right for you and which braces are the most effective?

The best way to make a decision is to visit children’s orthodontist at South Surrey Smiles for a consultation so that we can make a recommendation specifically for you. Everyone’s teeth and bite are different and there are some appliances that work better on specific issues.

Some of the most common appliances you will see are:

Metal or traditional braces – always an effective choice for straightening teeth and adjusting certain jaw problems like an overbite, underbite, or crossbite. Braces consist of adhering brackets to the teeth and connecting them with wires that are adjusted at each appointment. Elastics can also be added to help correct the alignment of the bite. Over time, the teeth move into a new place and a perfect smile is achieved.

Metal braces are the most common type of braces you’ll find. Partly because they are most well-known, therefore, many people are comfortable with the idea of them. They can also be the most cost-effective if budget is a concern.

Coloured braces – essentially the same as metal braces but a lot more fun! Coloured braces are especially popular with younger patients, and they can make a trip to the orthodontist exciting. Patients can colour coordinate for the holidays or get something exciting and extra fun for special occasions like birthdays.

Ceramic braces – they are similar in design and effectiveness to metal braces, but the brackets are made of ceramic so they camouflage with the teeth. The light colour is appealing for people who are self-conscious about getting braces, and are sometimes preferred by adults. They can be more expensive than metal braces, but the effectiveness is the same. It’s simply an aesthetic preference.

Invisalign – This new product consists of clear trays that slip over the teeth. There are a series of them, each tray designed to move the teeth to the ideal position. They are typically switched out every 1-2 weeks.

It can be difficult to tell when a person is wearing an Invisalign tray over their teeth, which is precisely the point. And while this option is excellent for many people, it does have its limits. Whether or not they are an effective option for a patient depends on the severity of the problem at hand. For more acute issues, braces might be far more effective.

At the end of the day, there are many options available when it comes to straightening your teeth and perfecting your bite. If you see them as a means to get the smile you’ve always dreamed of, it’s really a small price to pay. We say: Wear them proudly, self-improvement is always admirable!
