Can You Get Braces With Wisdom Teeth?
The answer is YES! Some people suggest that their teeth relapsed and went crooked in their later years due to wisdom teeth, however, there is no scientific research to support this. Science tells us that the wisdom teeth are too far back to have an effect on the front teeth.
As we age, just like getting grey hair and glasses, our teeth tend to migrate forward and collapse inwards. Unfortunately, it is part of the aging process and wisdom teeth are not to blame.
Wear A Retainer After Braces
At South Surrey Smiles, we encourage our patients to protect their teeth by wearing retainers after braces. We give all of our patients retainers once they complete full orthodontic treatment. It is only necessary to wear them periodically to bed at night to keep your teeth straight for life. This is the best way to avoid crooked teeth in the future.
The most common age to get braces is at around 11 or 12. This is mainly because we can use growth to our advantage in orthodontics giving us the most flexibility and treatment options for optimal results. At this age, it is pretty aggressive to go after wisdom teeth. On average, most people have their wisdom teeth removed between the ages of 17-25.
Ask Us For Braces Advice
We are happy to advise our patients on the right time to have their wisdom teeth removed and if it is necessary. It is most common to have 4 wisdom teeth, but some people only have 3, 2, 1, or even none! We will let you know how many you have if any at all. Although we do not remove teeth at our office, we are happy to make an excellent recommendation and get you in the right hands for this procedure.
