When should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist by age 7. This is an important age when children are starting to transition from primary to permanent dentition. It is an important stage to assess that your child will have favorable growth and development. If your child is under 7 but you have concerns regarding the growth or development of your child’s teeth or jaw, we would be happy to take a look at them.
The benefits of early treatment
One of the main benefits of an early screening appointment is to catch any issues before they become a problem. While children are still growing, a screening appointment provides the perfect opportunity to pursue certain treatment options that aren’t nearly as effective later in life. Catching specific problems early will be beneficial in that you will not have missed the window of opportunity with certain treatment options. Timing with growth often has an impact on which options are available. The earlier you catch the issue, the more options you will have! Often times, we will tell you that everything looks normal and we will continue to monitor your child’s growth and development on a yearly basis. On the off chance that we find something that requires early treatment, consider it an opportunity. These proactive solutions can help to set your child up with a favorable growth environment saving them from complex future treatment.
At the first visit, we will check tooth and jaw development, assess that your child has the right number of teeth, we can also check for potential future crowding. You can relax knowing that this will be a fun, encouraging a visit for your children. During your child’s visit, you will both learn about children’s braces, different types of treatment, and what you may expect to have happened in the future. It’s the perfect opportunity to ensure your child grows up with a healthy smile!
